Children begin thinking about “what I want to be when I grow up” early in life, as they play with their friends and watch their parent(s) go off to work every day. An ideal time to start career preparation is during the preteen years. Take the time to expose your children to a variety of occupations. If your daughter is interested in medicine, for example, let her spend time talking to her physician about the demands and rewards of this profession. The rewards of participating significantly in a child’s development cannot be measured. A parent who chooses to stay home is aware that her children will only be home for a season and that her impact on their intellect, development, and values will probably continue for decades. Rearing children is a career that requires a host of skills as well as insight, patience, and wisdom.
The world of work is changing to accommodate parents who have decided to spend more time with their children. An increasing number of options for working part-time or from a home office are making it possible for both moms and dads to be with their children more often and more consistently. Many women for whom an outside career or interest is important have created satisfying professional options for themselves from within the home setting. These are encouraging developments, both for women who want to pursue a career outside the home (whether now or in the future) and for women who are content to make home their career but who want to pursue artistic or community interests.
