How to copy a Child who always seeks out (holds the hand of) an adult during outside Play sessions

Published by dodo at 4:31 am under Kid, Kids Game, Kids Party, Toy

Toni always attaches herself to an adult by holding their hand when she is outside and will attempt to stay with that person for the entire session. When other children approach her and ask her to join them she becomes even more attached to the adult, holding on to their hand more tightly. All suggestions and encouragements from staff fail to engage Toni in the activities on offer.

Possible reasons for this behaviour

All My Children

Toni:

  • is frightened of the apparatus on offer outside which seems (to her) to be very different from things on offer indoors
  • has a hearing or visual problem
  • lacks confidence with the more physical apparatus
  • lacks experience of the outdoors — does she live in an apartment without access to a garden?
  • has been told that she must stay with an adult whenever she is outdoors is seeking attention — perhaps in response to a new baby at home?

Strategies:

  • Be aware of differences between the use of outdoor and indoor areas. Activities which are carried out indoors should be interchangeable with activities outdoors. For example, drawing doesn’t need only to be done inside, it can easily be transported to the outdoor areas. Similarly, using the climbing frame can be an indoor activity. If Toni likes table-top activities these should be on offer outdoors
  • Gradually encourage Toni to play with the larger wheeled toys and apparatus so that staff can make assessments about her gross motor skills and balance. This should be done with adult support at first Ask Toni’s parents or carers whether her hearing and vision have been checked. If her hearing and vision are normal, staff should encourage her to widen her use of apparatus by introducing them one at a time and emphasising how much fun they can be. Adults should model how to use the apparatus
  • Pair Toni up with a ‘buddy’ who could play with her on something she doesn’t normally use, e.g. a two-seater tricycle
  • If there is a new baby at home encourage Toni to talk about her brother/sister and praise her for helping Mummy etc.
