Super Nanny, Kids who cannot wait for his/her turn in Play
Milos is very keen to participate in everything on offer at the pre-school. So keen, in fact, that he is bursting to answer questions in whole-group sessions, often blurting out answers before the adult has finished talking. During games, Milos has difficulty waiting for his turn and just takes his turn before anyone can intervene. Milos acts on impulse and doesn’t seem to think first. When engaging in physical activities, Milos can behave very dangerously, throwing himself from the climbing frame without warning. When his attention is drawn to this, Milos appears not to know what he has done wrong.
Possible reasons for non-patience in Play
Milos may:
- be a very energetic individual who just needs to direct his energy more effectively
- not understand the social rules of behaviour, e.g. turn taking and being aware that other people have feelings which need to be taken account of
- have a poor sense of the consequences of his own actions
- be affected by ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
Strategies for help Kids in Play
- List the behaviours which are causing concern
- Be aware of the health and safety issues connected with Milos’s impulsive behaviour
- Refer Milos to a paediatrician in order to eliminate possible medical reasons for his behaviour
- Implement very good behaviour management planning. Milos may require a behaviour plan so that staff are consistent in managing him Let Milos know exactly what the expectations are before the activity begins
- Reward Milos whenever he demonstrates wanted behaviours
- Ensure that a high degree of structure and a visually strong method of teaching are used for Milos’s benefit
- Discuss the consequences of different types of behaviour so that Milos begins to develop an awareness of his own actions. Using puppets and social stories might be two ways of dealing with this
- Prepare an IEP for Milos in order to improve his ability to take turns
