Super Nanny, does your Kids who uses a lot of violence in Play
Billy is very much a loner in the pre-school and usually plays by himself. He sometimes attempts to engage with the other children but joins their activities without being asked and more or less imposes himself upon them. He likes to play with the dolls‘ house or in the home corner. The staff have observed that he uses the dolls to re-enact scenes that look quite violent. The dolls throw things around the house and tip the furniture up. Billy keeps a running commentary going while he plays and uses shouting to re-enact confrontations between the dolls. Billy plays this game most days at the pre-school and when staff attempt to talk to him he responds minimally and then goes off to play with something else. When Billy plays with the dolls in the home corner, he has been observed being very rough with them and `smacking’ them regularly.
Possible reasons for Kids Using Violence in Play
- watches a lot of television and is reproducing what he sees
- has quite limited play skills and repeats the same game because of this. It may reflect a general cognitive delay
- may be copying behaviour modelled by adults he lives with
- may be trying to make sense of what he has seen by re-enacting it in the dolls‘ house
Strategies for Preventing Kids Using Violence in Play
- Monitor Billy’s activities very closely and note these down factually
- There could be child protection issues — ensure staff are aware of procedures
- Make sure that Billy engages in a wide range of activities if staff believe him to have limited play skills. Resources should be planned with care to take account of this
- Monitor Billy’s general progress with the curriculum closely Discuss the issues with Billy’s parents/carers
