Planning a Super Fun Party
Giving a party can be a great deal of fun. It can be held to celebrate something special, or because it’s a particular time of the year; or it can be a spur of the moment get-together with friends. But whatever the occasion you’ll want it to go with a swing. And the nicest parties are usually those which have some careful planning behind them: ideas to get them going, and ideas for toning them down if they get too exuberant.
Ideally all the guests should go home feeling pleased with what they have contributed to the fun, and it is up to the hosts to give them a chance to show what they can do. But don’t over- organize If a game like Shipwrecks or Broadcasting (you’ll find them in the Index at the end) is a great success, it can go on for longer than you expected, and then it is maddening to have to stop because Hide and Seek is next on the programme
If you live in a flat or a semi-detached or terrace house, or if you intend to have your party in the garden, tell your neighbours in advance. Few people mind a noise provided they know it won’t happen every day!
What kind of party? Indoors or out? For people of the same age, or the family kind for mixed ages? This last sort takes more organizing, because pencil and paper games that suit a seven-year- old are no good for a ten-year-old. On the other hand, even if you are ten or more you often enjoy playing games like Blind Man’s Buff and pin the tail on Eeyore, if you know that later you can retreat upstairs to play records or organize a Quiz, while the younger ones paint happily downstairs.
If it’s an indoor party, be quite certain how much of the house you can use, and mark clearly those rooms which are out of bounds. This prevents a raid on your mother’s wardrobe when dressing up for Charades.
Even in summer you have to consider the weather and be prepared for a wet day (or a ‘very Blusterous’ one) that drives you indoors. This is when an attic, a play-room or even a large garage comes in useful. But if it is reasonably fine you can have an outdoor party even in winter, provided you warn your guests to come in their anoraks or macintoshes and Wellington boots. It’s useful to have some old jerseys and jeans to lend to anyone who has come in their best clothes.
Some parties, of course, are arranged on the spur of the moment. You get up and see that it’s a ‘hummy sort of day outside and birds singing’, and so you think it’s just the day to go on a picnic.
