Adolescence Physical Conditions (Health Care, Odour and Hair)
Adolescence Body Odour
Body odours become much stronger in adolescence—partly as a result of glandular changes and skin changes, partly as the result of axillary (armpit) hair on which perspiration collects and is decomposed by bacterial action. It is essential that teenagers, in a society like ours which considers body smells offensive, take a careful soap or shower daily and follow with an underarm deodorant.
Adolescence Hair and Scalp
Sweat is more profuse and oily in adolescence, which means that hair on the head gets to look greasy and straggly in a shorter time. Dandruff appears in winter and may become profuse. The hair should be washed once a week, more often if necessary. If dandruff is troublesome, a dermatologist should be consulted.
Most girls feel that the hair on their legs is dark enough so that they need to shave it once a week. (Shaving does not coarsen hair.) It can also be removed with a wax or chemical depilatory.
General Adolescence Health Care
Many older adolescents and youths have an impulse to scorn health rules, to get along on little sleep, to eat a lopsided diet, as if proving their stamina and daring. To be sure, adolescence is a generally healthy age period. But occasionally there are physical diseases to which neglect contributes. It’s worth keeping your body in good condition during this stressful period. Visit your doctor and dentist regularly. Eat a sensibly balanced diet.
In recent decades there has been a progressive increase in arteriosclerosis, including coronary heart disease, in young adults. It is suspected by some researchers, though not proved, that this is due to three factors. Most often blamed is a diet rich in animal fats, particularly the fat in meats, whole milk, butter; and also the cholesterol in eggs. A second suspected factor is cigarette smoking. A third is lack of exercise. Pending further knowledge it is not sensible to try to cut out all animal fats but only to cut off the extra fat from meat, to hold down on butter and cream, to drink mostly skimmed milk, to eat not more than two eggs a week.
